2.3 THERE IS ANOTHER SKY

 2.3 THERE IS ANOTHER SKY

Analysis of poem
2.3  THERE IS ANOTHER SKY     by  Emily Dickenson
 • About the poem, poet and title.
Poem: poem is written in calling tone to the Austin a brother of poetess who went to the Bosten as a part his duties. It is very lucid and simple having a significant meaning. It is one type of letter by the poet to her brother.
Poet:  Emily Dickinson was born in 1830, in the town of Amherst, Massachusetts. Emily was known as a grief poet. Isolation, dark side of life, Death, World after Death etc. are the ground theme of Emily’s poem. Emily Dickinson seldom left her home. By the 1860s she lived in almost complete isolation.  Her work was not recognized during her lifetime. The publication of her poems posthumously gained her a large recognition and reputation. She died in 1886, aged 55.
Title of poem: There is another sky, indicates a new sky for the better way of life. It suggests another world in which one can lead his/ her life peacefully. Poetess very aptly has used this title for the poem.
• Theme/summary/gist of the poem.
Poetess Emily suggests Austin that there is another sky, a sky which is bright and calm. He should not worry about tired and troublesome condition of his life. Though in the world of Austin, there is darkness, he should not think about it because in this new world here is new sunshine. It is the world of new energy and enthusiasm. Poetess advised her brother not to mind the faded forests that he observed as well as he must not mind the silent fields also. Here is a little forest which is exactly the opposite to the condition in which he is leading his life. The leaves in this forest are ever green. It has bright gardens. It is untouched by frost so it remained evergreen forever. It has bright, unfading flowers where he can hear the humming sound of bees. Poetess calls her brother with his nickname “Prithee” and advised him to leave the place where is living and come back to the garden which is created by the poetess.
Poetic style/language, poetic devices used in the poem.                                                Poem has an encouraging, inspiring and hopeful dictation tone. Poetess offers her brother a new world and not to worry about the unexpected circumstances very clearly. A manner of poem is very simple having clear ideas and meaning. Language of poem is very dictational. One can easily gain the expectation of poetess about her brother. To enrich the poem, poet has used some poetic ornaments. Though poem has a lack of rhyming words but poetess very effectively used figure of speech to compare her new world.
Use of figure of speech:
1.Metaphor:
‘There is another sky’, title of poem itself is a metaphor.
Poet indicates that this is new world with a bunch of promising expectations.
2.Repetition:
1. Never mind faded forests, Austin,
   Never mind silent fields.
Explanation: Words Never mind are repeated for musical and rhythmic touch.

2. Prithee, my brother,     Into my garden come.
Explanation: Word ‘my’ is repeated for musical and rhythmic touch.

Onomatopoeia:
‘I hear the bright bee hum’.
Explanation: word ‘hum’ indicates the sound.

 Hyperbole:
1.     Whose leaf is ever green.
Explanation: over statement about leaf is made. Actually there is no leaf in nature which stands green forever.
2.     In its unfading flowers.
Explanation: Flower is exaggerated. Every flower fades by time.

Alliteration:
1. Never mind faded forests, Austin,
Explanation: phonetic sound ‘ f ’ is repeated to create musical effect.
2.‘I hear the bright bee hum’.
Explanation: phonetic sound ‘ b  ’ is repeated to create musical effect

• Special features/novelties/focusing elements.
Poem has a touch of letter. It realizes us about a love and affection between poetess and her brother. This poem is exception to the poems of Emily Dickenson written on gloomy atmosphere. It indicates the strong bonding of brotherhood. Simplicity of words and suggestive tone of poem catches the mind of readers.
• Message/values/morals in the poem.
It is a suggestive poem to the person who is tired and panic by unhealthy duties and uncomfortable atmosphere. Poem encourages the readers mind to be more positive by attitude.
• Your opinion about the poem.
I think that this is one of the best poem written by Emily Dickenson which give a new point of view to agonies of person. Poem is enriched with a lot of suggestions and new direction of leading our life calmly. Poet may call us to her world of poems which is created by herself. Really world of poem is imbued with evergreen leaf and unfading flowers, having a power to please the person forever.

Film Review

Film Review

Story: Rancho(Amir Khan) , Raju and Farhan enter the best engineering college. They want to learn lessons of life. It cannot be taught through books and classrooms. Principal Viru Sahastrabuddhe is no help at all.He believes in enforcing knowledge and information.

Movie Review:  It is indeed a great movie getting the seetis and taalis. It is a movie reflecting educational system and parental aspirations.

The three idiots, Rancchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad (Aamir Khan), Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) and Farhan Qureshi (R Madhavan), are perfect revolutionist of the new age Indian. They choose to live life on their own terms. They pave new roads deviating from the rat race. Of course, they begin on the beaten track -- due to societal/parental pressure -- but refuse to become cogs in the wheel. Naturally, they end up heroes taking the road less travelled by.

The film begins with the entry of our threesome in the city's elite engineering college. They face the mandatory ragging sessions. New entrant Baba Rancchoddas, as his friends fondly call him becomes leader . Rancho not only leads his friends through the maze of India's competitive and high-pressure education system but also he tutors them on several life mantras. Like, running after excellence, not success; questioning not blindly accepting givens; inventing and experimenting instead of copying and cramming and following your heart's calling if you truly want to achieve success .

So, you have the threesome in a confrontation with authority, as represented through the Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani), the unsmiling Principal. He advocates to kill the competition, because there is only one place at the top. Students like Chatur (Omi) end up as duhs in real life and non-conformists (Rancho ), could end up as eventual winners. More importantly, they could be high not only in IQ (intelligence quotient) but in EQ (emotional quotient) too, never losing their humaneness and social networking skills.

The high point of the film is the fact that director Rajkumar Hirani says so much, without losing his sense of humour. The film keeps audience laughing despite being high on fundas. Certain sequences almost have you rolling in the aisle, like the ragging sequence, Omi's chamatkar/balatkar speech, the threesome's wedding crasher sequence, their mournful meal with Raju's mournful mum and Rancho's sundry demos to prove how Kareena has chosen the wrong guy for herself. The second half of the film does falter in parts, specially the child birth sequence, but it doesn't take long for the film to jump back on track.

Amongst the performances, Aamir Khan is stupendous as the rule-breaker Rancho. But the rest of the cast doesn't remain in the shadows. Both Sharman and Madhavan manage to carve their independent characters as lovable rebels too. Even Kareena shines out, despite her short role. A special mention for Boman Irani who is impeccable as `Virus', newcomer Omi who perfectly slips into the stereotype of the best.

Story: Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi script a warm and rude education system that prepares rats for a rat race.
Dialogue: Witty and wild, the film walks away with the best comic scene of the year citation with its uproarious `balatkar' speech.

Music: Shantanu Moitra may not have forced you to pick up the music album of the film but the songs do come alive on screen, specially Zoobie-Doobie and Aal Izz Well.

Choreography: Nice one .

Cinematography: The streets of Delhi and the picture postcard beauty of Ladakh are captured.

·       Science made man powerful in this universe.
·       Science increases life span of man.

Ans-
Science is a curse to Human Beings

Science is called as blessing to human beings. But it is not real. In fact science made man’s life so terrible that it should be called a curse to human beings.
Though science helped man in his progress, it also led man’s life in threat. The weapons like nuclear bomb, pistols, rifles, guns and other armaments become hazard to human life. The facilities which science provides to man many time makes man idle and lazy. Science increases the speed of work but also resulted in loss of enjoyment and jobless workers. The balance of Nature is overthrown by man with the help of science. There is increase in various kinds of pollution and environmental problems due to science. Man loose his peace of mind and becoming a machine. The development in medicine also led to destruction of female babies before birth. Some medicines also have serious side effects. Seeing all these points it can be said that science is a curse to human being

Q. Prepare a paragraph for a counterview section on the topic 'Sports should be optional in Colleges'.
You can take help of the following points in the 'view' section.
                 Heavy burden of studies
                 No time for sports
                 More importance to academics success
                 Lack of proper infrastructure
Ans: Counterview:
Sports should be compulsory in Colleges
I do not agree with the above mentioned statement that 'sports should be optional in  colleges'. Whether it is a school or a college, students have a lot to gain from sports. It removes stress from hard studies. It also keeps the students very active and fit. Sports help in inculcating many important qualities like team-work, determination, self-confidence, leadership, reasoning, endurance  etc. that play an important role in the development of an individual's personality. Often, more emphasis on studies suppresses the need for sports in a student's life. Institutions should allot some time for sports for the benefit of the students. Young students are full of energy and it is vital to give way to their energy in the right direction. Also, providing a platform to raw talent would lead to the discovery of great sportspersons, who may bring honours to the nation in the near future. There should be proper time schedule for sports activities. Though academics success is important, heathy body and active personality is also essential. Sound mind stays in sound body. There is no problem of infrastructure as it is essential for each college to develop facilities for sports activities. Government is supporting sports by giving extra marks for achieving great success in competitions. Sports provides an overall learning experience for any individual, hence, it should be made compulsory in colleges.

2.1 Cherry Tree

Std.XI(Poetry) - 2.1 Cherry Tree - Analysis

Section Two- Poetry
2.1 Cherry Tree

Synopsis:
The poem Cherry Tree is about the ecstasy of the poet over a plant which he has seeded eight years ago. It took eight years to grow. In the poem, Bond expresses his wonder at the ways of nature and how it takes care of itself to survive against all odds. Eight year ago, the poet planted a cherry seed because he wanted to have a plant of his own. The young poet watered it daily but was unaware of the fact that cherry plant needs other special care too to grow into a healthy tree. In spite of getting any special attention, by the end of May, the poet saw the small cherry sapling coming out of the ground. It was a very small plant, young and fragile, vulnerable to all kinds of external dangers. Tall wild grasses grew all around it and ‘the goats’ ate its ‘leaves’ and then one day the grass cutter’s blade mercilessly ‘split it apart’. Its tender stem also bravely fought the heavy monsoon and even after all these, the poet saw new shoots growing out of it as the young tree made its struggle against nature to survive and fiercely made an ‘upward thrust’ to get ‘light and air and sun’.
The poet could now just wait and watch while he took pleasure on seeing his small cherry plant blossoming into a tree as ‘Time and the rain’ nourished it and like a miracle the tree grew, too stubborn to give up. Then it was time for the poet to bid adieu to his beloved tree as he went to Kashmir to spend a season there. The poet returned after a few months poor in health and heart but was overjoyed to find a ‘six feet high’ dark cherry tree at his doorstep. To his disbelief, he saw a small berry fruit hanging from a branch, ‘Hung from a branch—just one! a small little pink and fragile berry that could fall at the single stir of wind.
In his ecstasy, the poet “lay on the grass” whole day at leisure to look up to the cherry tree as the “finches” flew past and birds flocked in and out of the tree and the bees drank nectar from each ‘bloom’. Soon it was dark and stars lit the whole night sky and the ‘moon-moths’ and crickets sang. As the poet enjoyed the rapture of nature and felt himself akin with it, he marveled at his own creation, the small cherry plant that has grown into a big tree over the span of eight years. In the ending couplet, the poet associates himself with the nature and creator, as he takes pride for being part of it. Cherry Tree is therefore, the poet’s rumination about the ways of nature as it participates in the process of creation. It is the struggle of each living object to fight and survive despite all odds.
